Wheel of Time BOB audition video sheds light on Logain Ablar’s story

Among the many exciting big budget fantasy projects currently in the works, Amazon’s The Wheel of Time series stands out due to its devoted fan community, that eagerly takes up every tiny bit of new information, whether it is dead-serious or bordering on the absurd. A few month ago, Redanian Intelligence broke the news of a character called Steve joining the ranks of The Wheel of Time cast and the name promptly became an internet meme.

It seems we’re not quite done yet as we learned today that Amazon is apparently also looking to cast Steve’s congenial partner-in-crime BOB. Yes you heard that right! The news comes courtesy of a recently uploaded audition tape by actor Steven Smith, embedded below:

On a serious note, it’s quite obvious that BOB is in fact a codename for a currently unknown character. The tape matches the code-language of previous videos: “Nagar Reborn” is used in place of “The Dragon Reborn”. “Asgard” stands for Tar Valon. There is also talk about “witches and their partners”, a reference to the Aes Sedai and their Warders, as well as “the Whitehoods”, i.e. “the Children of the Light”.

This muddling of the terminology is often seen in audition videos, especially for highly secretive, high-profile projects. As the video will most likely be taken down eventually, we have included a transcription below:

BOB: We must do something

Reja: There’s nothing we can do BOB!

BOB: That man! The Nagar Reborn! The man you call our leader. I call my friend. And I will not sit idly by while Asgard sentences him to death.

Reja: So what will you do? What can we do? He’s locked in the stone circle surrounded by hundreds of witches and their partners.

BOB: The Whitehoods have fought the witches for a thousand years. They have a saying: Even a channeller will fall to an arrow in the night or a dagger in the back.

Reja: You want to march with the Whitehoods to rescue him?

BOB: I find them loathsome and self-righteous too Reja but I will team up with anyone short of the devil to go free my friend.

From what we gathered from the conversation, BOB seems to be a friend and supporter of the alleged (and imprisoned) Dragon Logain Ablar, who will have an expanded role in the first season of The Wheel of Time. Usually, code names have the same initials as the character they stand for. I’m not aware of a supporter of Logain’s, whose name starts with a B existing in the books, but I am only down to book three of fourteen. Long-standing readers will know better no doubt.

That’s it for today’s news. First Steve and now BOB! You have to admire the ingenuity of the people who come up with these names. In any case, we’ll keep you updated on all serious and not-so serious Wheel of Time news we learn about.
