House of the Dragon: Audition tape for Ser Criston Cole revealed in Game of Thrones spinoff
It has been a minute since we had anything substantial for House of the Dragon, the much anticipated Game of Thrones prequel set 193 years before the main series. While the main cast has mostly been revealed, there are many roles that are yet unknown. One such role is Ser Criston Cole, or as the secretive HBO casting process would have it, Clint.
Last year, the role description for Cole in the HBO series was already revealed by The Illuminerdi: Male – late 20s/30s – Series Regular: Middle Eastern or Mediterranean. Ruggedly handsome, the soul of knighthood and chivalry, a capable warrior.
Criston Cole has an interesting arc as a member of Viserys I Targaryen‘s Kingsguard and then Lord Commander and Hand of the King to his son Aegon. We’re quite excited to see how the show will handle Cole’s interesting and eventful career and much more.
Now we have an audition tape for the role of Clint for a project called Red Gun by actor Firass Dirani. If you have been reading us, you will remember that Red Gun is the codename for House of the Dragon and Clint is obviously Ser Criston Cole. As always with these auditions, remember that the person who uploaded the tape most likely didn’t get the role.
One other warning: these scenes are most likely just written for the auditions and won’t be featured in the show itself. However, they are a decent first look at the writing quality in a show or a film.
Also, as always happens with these tapes, it will soon be deleted so here’s a transcription of the video:
Scene 1
We’re not sure who is Cole talking to here, but out bet would be Alicent Hightower. Could be someone else as well, but certainly not Rhaenyra Targaryen as she is mentioned during the dialogue. The scene also borrows a thing or two from Brienne’s conversation with Catelyn Stark.
Clint: My Lord, my lady, my name is..
Lady: Ser Clint. We’ve met, at tourney where you knocked the King’s brother into the dirt. What can I do for you on this fine afternoon?
Clint: My lady, before I came to King’s Landing I was in service to Lord Darren. If it pleases His Grace the King, I will now protect you. I will shield your back and keep your council and give my life for yours if need be. I swear it by the Old Gods and the New.
Lady: Please ser, no need for such formality. You were Darren’s sworn sword?
Clint: I was.
Lady: Strange. I knew him from the time we were children. I never saw you.
Clint: It was after his father’s murder.
Lady: Ah, yes. I was there that night. You were accused of killing him.
Clint: I tried to save him.
Lady: But you were accused.
Clint: By men who didn’t see what happened.
Lady: And what did happen? You were with him when he died, were you not? His protector.
Clint: He was murdered by a shadow.
Lady: A shadow. This man swore to protect his liege, he failed. Why would the king want someone with your history of failure guarding his heir?
Clint: Why should you have any say in her affairs?
Lady: Because I serve the king. You’re an outsider. Forgive me, ser, but experiences have made me very weary of outsiders.
Clint: My lady, if we could have a word.. alone.
Lady: No.
Clint: Please, my lady, if I could explain myself.
Lady: You should leave.
Scene 2
Unlike the previous scene, in this one we are pretty certain that the person Cole is talking to is Rhaenyra Targaryen. It also borrows heavily from Arianne Martell’s conversation with Arys Oakheart in A Feast of Crows.
Lady: There is wine. Are you thirsty?
Clint: No.
Lady: You bleed. I scratched too hard.
Clint: Don’t. No more.
Lady: I have balm, for the scratches.
Clint: Scratches are nothing. Excuse me my lady but, uh.. I must go.
Lady: So soon? Stay with me tonight, ser. I still have much to teach you.
Clint: I have learned too much from you already.
Lady: You seemed glad enough by the lessons at the time, ser. Are you certain you’re not off to some other bed with some other woman?
Clint: You know I have no other woman. Only duty.
Lady: That poxy bitch? I know her. Dry as dusk between her legs and her kisses leave you bleeding. Let “duty’ sleep alone for once and stay with me tonight.
Clint: My place is at the palace.
Lady: With your other princess? You make me jealous. I think you love her more than me.
Clint: You should not say such things. I love the princess as a daughter and I promised we would to go to the gardens.
Lady: You will be lonely at the gardens. And where is the brave young gallant who said he wished to spend the rest of his life in my arms?
Clint: I was drunk when I said that!
Lady: You had three cups of watered wine!
Clint: I was drunk on you. It had been ten years since.. I never touched a women, well, since I took the white. I never knew what love could be. Yet now I’m afraid.
Lady: What would frighten my white knignt?
Clint: I fear for mu honour and for yours.
Lady: I can tend to my own honour. Your hands are shaking. You’re not your white cloak, ser.
Clint: I am. I am my cloak and this must end. If we were to be discovered..
Lady: Men would think you fortunate.
Clint: Men would think of me as oathbreaker. What if someone were to get word to your father and how I dishonored you?
Lady: Tell me true, ser. Is it my dishonour that concerns you or your own?
Clint: Both. That is why this is the last time.
Lady: So you’ve said before.
Clint: All I want is for this to end. This!
Lady: I begin to think that all your words of love were lies.
Clint: Why else would I have forsaken all my honour but for love? When I am with you, I can scarcely think. You are all I ever dreamt about, but..
Lady: Ugh, words are wind.
Clint: I swore a vow.
Lady: Not to wed, not to father children.. Well, I have drunk my moon tea and you know I cannot marry you. Oh I might be persuaded to keep you for my paramour.
Clint: Now you mock me.
Lady: Maybe a little. Do you think you’re the only knight who ever loved a woman?
Clint: There has always been men who found it easier to speak of vows than to keep them, but I will not be remembered as Ser Clint the Unworthy. I will not soil my cloak.
HBO’s House of the Dragon is currently slated to enter production in April 2021 for a 2022 release. We’ll keep and eye on things and will share if we find something.
